Assistant Federal Public Defender
The Federal Public Defender, District of New Jersey, is accepting applications for an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Newark office. The Federal Public Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C., section 3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts. The office is part of the Judicial Branch of the government. The position, therefore, is considered at will and is not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act. An Assistant Federal Public Defender must be: (1) a graduate of an accredited law school, and admitted to practice in good standing before the highest court of a state; (2) licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, or must become so licensed at the earliest opportunity after entrance on duty; and (3) licensed to practice law in the state of New Jersey, or must become so licensed at the earliest opportunity after entrance on duty. Applicants must have a minimum of three years criminal law experience, strong research and writing skills, a commitment to the representation of indigent and disadvantaged clients, and a reputation for personal integrity. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation, including an IRS tax check and an FBI name and fingerprint check. Qualified persons may apply by emailing a letter of interest, resume, three references, and a recent writing sample – not to exceed 10 pages – in a single .pdf document to FPDNJ@fd.org. Staff Attorney (6) – Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Monmouth and Ocean County Neighborhood Offices (1 per office)
Under the direction of the unit Managing Attorney, the Staff Attorney provides highest quality of legal service to SJLS clients in a variety of poverty law matters. Staff Attorney- Centralized Intake Unit (CIU) – Camden Office
Under the direction of the unit Managing Attorney, the CIU Staff Attorney provides highest quality of legal service to SJLS clients in a variety of poverty law matters. Staff Attorney- Farmworkers’ Rights Project– Program Wide

Assistant Pro Bono Coordinator (Administration – Toms River or Freehold Office)
Under the supervision of the Director of Pro Bono Services, the Pro Bono Coordinator will work with the Director of Pro Bono Services in coordinating placement and supervision of cases referred to pro bono attorneys to assist eligible clients with legal matters. The Pro Bono Coordinator is also responsible for working with the Director of Pro Bono Services in helping to recruit and maintain a pro bono attorney panel to handle these cases. This position involves outreach and involvement with the local bar associations, law schools and community organizations.
